Built in 1926 by Thomas (Tommy) Street, who was a farrier and blacksmith just up the road at the Island, opposite the Foresters Arms. Tommy and his wife Alice ran the shop until they retired in 1955. They then sold the business to Harold Bush and his wife, Emmeline. Their son, Eric, took over the running of the shop when Harold died. The shop was enlarged several times by Eric.

Alan Bartlett began working in the shop as a Saturday boy at the age of fourteen. He has been here ever since, except for six years. In 1995, when Eric Bush retired, Alan took over the business with his brother, David, joined by their wives, Alison and Evelyn. Father Len Bartlett also helped in the shop, along with other family members and all the children, who worked as Saturday assistants as soon as they were old enough.

Today, the shop is owned and run by Alan and Alison, who manage it with the help of a team of part-time assistants and Saturday staff.
